BMW sportscar of the future

The plug-in hybrid BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is a high-performance 2+2 concept study that the German carmaker says will give a vision of how dynamic performance can be married to sustainable motoring.

“The concept is an emotional expression of BMW’s desire to retain driving pleasure when it comes to sustainable motoring,” BMW Group Australia managing director Stavros Yallouridis says. “This is a glimpse of the future BMW and it packages all of our Efficient Dynamics technologies into one car to show what’s possible. “Some of the components used are already in production, will be introduced soon or are in various stages of development,” he says.

The car carries a three-cylinder turbo-diesel and two electric motors – one for each axle — developing overall 262kW of power and maximum torque of 800Nm, with those outputs getting to all four wheels .

BMW says the concept gets to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited), but fuel economy is expected to be just 3.76 litres/100 km in the EU cycle, while CO2 emissions are 99gm/km – falling to just 50gm/km when the car is entirely under electric power.

The car uses a regenerative braking system to capture energy, with enough being stored in its 98 lithium polymer cells to give it a 50km range on electric mode. Designers looked to the aerodynamic knowledge of Formula 1 to reduce the body’s drag coefficient to just 0.22, with an emphasis on high-tech materials.

The opening system for the gullwing doors has been optimised for weight, while polycarbonate glass inserts in the doors and roof darken to shield the interior from strong light.
