The Mayor of Houston, Texas Bill White says he wants to make his city ‘the nation's green energy capital’. The city has begun installing charging points in a bid to encourage Texan’s out of their thirsty pick-up trucks and Cadillac’s and into electric cars.
But hang on -- this is Texas, home of George W Bush, NASCAR, giant hamburgers … and the last time I looked it was the birthplace and undisputed oil capital of America. The Texas economy runs on oil pumped straight out of deposits containing about enough oil to fill five billion barrels.
The state’s refineries produce up to 4.6 million barrels of oil a day and Houston boasts the largest oil refinery in America. So for a political leader to be talking up alternatives to the very industry that is the life blood of the state is a huge eye opener.
I wonder what the cowboys in the Texas oil industry think of the mayor’s very public endorsement of their mortal enemy the electric car. While I think the mayor might want to watch his back, maybe the lesson here for everyone is that if it can be done in Texas, it can be done anywhere.
