Fill up early to avoid price rise

Drivers should fill up today to avoid petrol price increases ahead of Easter.

Prices are tipped to rise up to about 14 cents a litre in some areas by this evening, with all regions expecting price rises by Thursday evening as people head off for the holiday weekend.

Prices generally start dropping again on Good Friday, and return to normal by the following Tuesday.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will monitor petrol, diesel and LPG prices over the break, and urged consumers to shop around.

“Price cycles occur whether there are public holidays or not in a week,” petrol commissioner Joe Dimasi said.

“Even if you have to `top up' later in the week, early buying can mean a significant saving for those intending to take advantage of the Easter break and travel long distances.”
