Mazda MX-5 Superlight: first look

Four weeks before the big event, the Japanese carmaker has unveiled its MX-5 Superlight version, a show car it says captures the pure essence of the world's most popular roadster.

After 20 years of global success, the MX-5 is hailed as the world's best-selling two-seater sportscar. At Frankfurt, Mazda will present a new take on its affordable roadster with the Mazda MX-5 Superlight version, designed at Mazdas studio in Frankfurt.

Designed as a pure show car, it takes the lightweight technology to new levels, improving driving performance, handling, fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

The car is said to get an even sportier chassis than the road-going version. This is combined with a radical exterior design that sheds weight by taking out the windscreen, roof, door handles.

Pure racing seats are fitted and there is no heating or radio. Instead, the car has an iPhone docking station ahead of the gearshift. As the photos show, even the door panels have been ditched in favour of a light-weight armrest frame.

Mazda first went completely topless in 1995 with the M-Speedster concept, following up with the race-track inspired 1989 Club Sport.

In 1999 when the second-generation body style arrived it revealed the single-seater MX5 Mono Posto endurance racer, which was shown at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.

Frankfurt opens on September 15.
