Toyota axes TRD

After just 888 sales, and 18 months, Toyota has been forced to close its high-performance TRD division in Melbourne.

No jobs will be lost but Toyota yesterday admitted that, with no prospect of a major sales increase for more than a year, it was forced to cut is losses.

"We've had to make a tough decision. It was costing us more than it was returning," TRD chief, Peter McGregor, said.

The TRD division was supposed to apply tasty sauce to the vanilla mainstream of the Toyota vehicle line, but its first product, a supercharged V6 Aurion, could not compete with rivals from Holden Special Vehicles and Ford Performance Racing. It was also hurt by a recall for engine problems in the first three months.

The second TRD model, based on the HiLux ute, has done better but not generated enough sales to take the sub-brand into the black.
