Would you like a new car with that?

... and the person serving you asks if you would like chips (or fries, if you want to be pedantic) with your meal, that is called ‘up selling’.

It’s a clever concept but not a new one; in fact it has been happening in the car industry for years.  Car buyers have long been shelling out for ‘must have’ accessories like factory floor mats, headlight shields and even paint and rust protection.

Many people have also signed up for a more expensive model than they had intended to purchase after some careful nudging from a friendly car salesman or woman.

This case however takes ‘up selling’ to a new level.  In the US a woman has filed a lawsuit claiming she was pressured into buying a new car while she was waiting for a simple oil change.

The 77-year-old says she was berated for hours to buy a new Hyundai while she waited for the service on her 2006 car.  She says she told the salesperson she couldn’t afford a new car but eventually caved in.

It will be interesting to see how the case pans out.  In the meantime beware of the charms of the humble car salesman next time you take your car in for a service.

You could end up with more than just a stamp in your service book.
